YUSHU EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Tibet Earthquake causes widespread devastation and loss of life

Over two thousand and sixty four people have died, and over 12,000 injured as a result of the devastating earthquake which struck Tibetan Yushu county on 14th April. Yushu is in Qinghai province of China, high on the Tibetan plateau, an impoverished area largely populated by Tibetans. Over 70% of the buildings in the town have been flattened, leaving thousands homeless and shivering in tents overnight in sub-zero conditions. The freezing temperatures and high altitude have hampered search and rescue teams, but hundreds of monks arrived in the worst-affected areas from all over the region to help dig survivors out by hand.

Rigul Trust has responded immediately by sending £ 1,000 to help the relief effort. We have set up an earthquake relief fund, and welcome contributions towards immediate emergency aid and and then vital ongoing welfare projects. Payments for disaster relief can be made in one of the following ways:

Since the earthquake, the survivors have had to contend with sandstorms, hail and snow.  At an altitude of 3,700 metres above sea level, overnight temperatures regularly fall below zero, even in Spring – thousand made homeless are now living in tents.

Here school children in Yushu are seen wearing dust-masks to protect themselves from the sandstorms, whilst they gather together on a national day of mourning for the dead.

As the search and rescue teams leave, work has now shifted to the long task of re-building what has been destroyed. Emergency aid funds are urgently required to help these impoverished and devastated people pick themselves up and rebuild their lives.
