TIBET CHINA EARTHQUAKE UPDATE- EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR YUSHU

EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

YUSHU QINGHAI TIBETAN PLATEAU CHINA

On 14th April 2010, an earthquake reaching 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Yushu County, Kham, an impoverished area of Tibet and largely populated by Tibetans. Official reports now put the death toll at 2,064, with more than 12,000 injured and 175 missing. Homes, schools, monasteries and health facilities have all collapsed to rubble. Photographs reveal a scene of complete devastation.

Since the earthquake, the survivors have had to contend with sandstorms, hail and snow. At an altitude of 3,700 metres above sea level, overnight temperatures regularly fall below zero, even in Spring – thousand made homeless are now living in tents.

Here school children in Yushu are seen wearing dust-masks to protect themselves from the sandstorms, whilst they gather together on a national day of mourning for the dead.

As the search and rescue teams leave, work has now shifted to the long task of re-building what has been destroyed. Funds are urgently required to help these impoverished and devastated people pick themselves up and rebuild their lives.

You can help them in three ways.
